US Is The Loser in New Trade Agreement
Submitted by David e. Delk on May 5, 2005 - 9:35pm
Rep Peter DeFazio understands what is wrong with the CAFTA (Central America Free Trade Agreement). Why does Rep Blumenauer still refuse to take a position on this issue? He says he wants to influrence the final outcome but yet he knows that with "trade" agreements agreed to under Fast Track Authority, no amendments are possible. He likely thinks that he will help write a side agreement to CAFTA. MAybe but he must know that the two side agreements to NAFTA have been complete failures. Side agreements to CAFTA are no more likely to be sucessful. Not when the agreement has so many defects. Call Rep. Blumenauer and tell him to join his environmental, labor and pro-democracy friends in stating now that he will vote NO on CAFTA! http://www.registerguard.com/news/2005/05/04/ed.col.defazio.0504.html Guest Viewpoint: U.S. is the loser in new trade deal Proponents of so-called "free" trade agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement, which I opposed, have long promised endless riches for U.S. workers, farmers, businesses and economy. They've been wrong on all counts. • CAFTA will increase the already record-high U.S. trade deficit. • CAFTA will lead to the export of U.S. jobs. • CAFTA is not about exporting U.S. goods to Central America. • CAFTA will erode U.S. sovereignty. • CAFTA will hurt Oregon farmers. • CAFTA will restrict government procurement that benefits U.S. workers. • CAFTA is a model for an even larger expansion of NAFTA. Peter DeFazio, a Springfield Democrat, represents Oregon's 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. |
