IM-IM-IMPEACHMENT

The following was blogged on to the Mult Dem website today, following a rather worrysome "conversation" with a few Dems on thursday night. If you know of anyone going to the Dem State Meeting in Medford this weekend, please share your thoughts and concerns with them....

It's okay; you can say it: IMPEACHMENT.

While most of us on the blue side of the aisle have no problem recognizing that the follies of BushCO have risen to the level of criminality and should thereby be subject to investigation, there are those among us afraid to put our money where are mouth is. They resist calling for impeachment or even investigations that would lead to the impeachment of BushCO.

The two arguments they promote are these: 1) We don't want to look stupid, and 2) It'll never happen anyway. At this weekend's Democratic State Meeting, these arguments will doubtless be heard as the Party considers a resolution demanding that impeachment investigations begin.

"IT'LL MAKE US LOOK STUPID"

Is it really that "stupid" to stand on the grounds of ethics and demand that our president be accountable for the lies and manipulations he told Congress about Iraq? Is this perception of "looking stupid" an internalization of right-spin that has characterized Dems as malcontents and whiners?

What would truly be stupid is for us to remain mute as grassroots democrats, willing to only talk of impeachment at the local coffeehouse, afraid to officially voice our convictions.

By doing nothing, backing away from something that we know is right and proper, we give credence to those that label us as "whiners," a lot of talk, but no direction and no action.

The Republicans set the bar for impeachment.. going after Bill Clinton for his sexual exploits. And we're AFRAID to go after BushCO for exploits that have plunged this country into war!?

"IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE..."

So what.

You take action because it's the right thing to do, not because you are convinced you'll succeed.

This country - and the world, for that matter - needs to hear that Americans ARE calling for the accountability of their sword-waving president. The very word "impeachment" should begin to echo in every crevice of our society.

If we take a lead in demanding the truth, others will join us. If we say nothing, we will have failed in our mission to be the party that truly looks after the people.

Our own State Democratic Chair, Jim Edmundson, had a great Op-Ed piece published in the LA Times. Responding to the rightie criticism of Howard Dean's comments, Jim told Howard to "SHOUT IT OUT!"

Damn right, Jim, and we need to do the same.
