Rep. David Wu - Not a "Conspiracy Theorist"
Submitted by KC Hanson on August 24, 2005 - 9:24am
When supporters spoke to Oregon Congressman David Wu (D-1st) about corporate influence on elections at his annual fundraiser "You, Wu, and Brew," (8/17/05) his reply was to claim that he wasn't a "conspiracy theorist." To respond to faithful supporters in such a manner indicates his complete failure to recognize that the rampant problems of the 2004 election foretell future trouble. Apparently, Wu is more concerned about the Republican Frame Machine labels then he is about restoring (or even improving) the voting process. Wu has stubbornly refused to acknowledge election reform as a worthy issue. While a February '05 Portland forum on election process hosted by Oregon Reps. Darlene Hooley (D-2nd) and Earl Blumenauer (D-3rd) clearly illuminated their interest as they listened to testimony from officials (including Oregon SOS Bill Bradbury) and activists, Wu's absence from the event was blatant. And the invitation had been extended. Wu's continuing avoidance of this issue must be confronted. Constiuents of his district can reach him via his website: Tell Rep. Wu that citizens deserve accountability in the election system, and it is his duty to ensure that accountability. |

Good for you KC!
Thank you for approaching Wu on this. How extremely disappointing that he is using the tired "conspiracy" frame. I am sure I have written to him on this issue, and his form letter reply gave the usual Kerry-esque blather about wanting to ensure that the system worked well, every vote was counted, blah blah. I don't see him standing up and being visible on anything frankly. I'll write him again but I don't see him as having nearly the spine of, say, deFazio.
At least Wu has signed on to the Downing St. investigation resolution--along with (as of today!) a GOP congressman from IOWA! Yeaarrghh!
Congressman Wu and election reform
I wrote Congressmen Wu a letter about the election reform issue a few months ago. I got a form letter back that indicated he supported HAVA reform, but it was clear whatever staffer sent his answer didn't read what I wrote.
I sure wouldn't mind DLC Wu having someone run at him from the left, especially considering the ruckus Goli Ameri stirred up with the old assault charge in the last go round.
