Host a House Party to Stop the Power Grab
Submitted by swetherson on December 16, 2005 - 3:01pm.
Last fall, Portland voters said “no!” to a million-dollar, business-backed campaign for mayor. This spring, the City Council showed us they heard the message and passed a campaign reform measure – voter-owned elections. Now, candidates have a way to run for office without relying on big-money donors. Voter-owned elections reduces the power of special interests and wealthy campaign contributors and instead gives the power to ordinary voters. And that’s exactly why the special interests are trying to repeal it. They have lost influence, and they want to get it back. Opponents of voter-owned elections have a lot to loose, and that’s why they will undoubtedly go to great lengths to protect their ability to invest in City Hall. While they have deep pockets to buy mail and airtime to get out their deceptive messages, they can’t match our grassroots power. You can help build momentum for the campaign to defeat the repeal effort by holding a voter-owned elections house party for your friends and family. House parties will help us raise critical dollars, recruit hundreds of volunteers, and reach thousands of voters. We’ll help you with a kit that will walk you step-by-step through the process. We’ll provide a speaker who can answer your guests’ questions and bring folks up to speed on the latest campaign news. Your house party early in 2006 will cascade into more money, volunteers, and voter contacts down the line. Contact the campaign today to learn how you can sign up today. You can reach Sarah at 503/283-1922 or swetherson@oregonfollowthemoney.org. P.S. Can’t hold a house party alone? Find a co-host to split the work. Call us for help! Bookmark/Search this post with: »
