Statesman Journal - Peralta Pledges to Avoid Special Interest Funds

Submitted by salvador on March 22, 2006 - 3:53pm
  • Yamhill County

I had a nice writeup in the Salem Statesman Journal today.

(Peralta) said he will not accept contributions from political action committees of businesses or trade associations that are not in Yamhill County, or from labor unions outside the county.

"I believe that too many of our elected officials in Salem and Washington, D.C., serve two masters," he said, identifying the first group as the voters.

"The second set of masters are the special-interest lobbyists and business associations that primarily fund political campaigns in Oregon and spend millions to lobby our representatives on public policy. The result of this dual ownership of our political process is a system in which we have public servants ... who all too often do a poor job of shaping and passing public-interest public policy."

Mr. Peralta--

Mr. Peralta--
we covered your announcement at Loaded Orygun, and took note of your unique declaration on finance.

If I might quibble, I think the headline here goes too far...you don't appear to be avoiding special interest money, just that which is non-local. Admirable to be sure, but let's not over-gild the lily!

And I'm sorry to see your campaign go down in flames by making up stories about your grandmother. Remember what happened to Al Gore!(smirk)

Best of luck against Sen. Nelson,

... but most of the money from these orgs comes from outside of the district, and in fairness, I basically used the SJ headline, replacing only "Peralta" for "District 24 Challenger".

Take care,

Sal
