Bush's Angst
Submitted by Tom Davis on July 21, 2006 - 10:25am
David Broder of the Washington Post, called the Dean of Op-Ed writers by many, had a "poor Bush" Op-Ed about our leaders worries as he went to the G8 conference. That must be why Boy George "massaged" the German Chancellor. Broder's message was that our poor President had so many worries, but had only caused one of the reasons for his worry, i.e. the Viet.. oops, Iraq invasion. Well, enough BS is too much so I wrote Broder. I know he won't read it, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Here's my letter followed by a link to Broder's article. ___________________________ Hi Mr Broder - The only disagreement I have with your analysis in "For Bush, A World Of Worry" is that Bush's administration is at least partially responsible for most of the problems you mentioned. The Iraq debacle is the cause of the animosity toward the US in many parts of the World, particularly the Mideast. Our continuous support for Israel's land expropriation and colonization, not to mention the attacks on residential areas and killing of families, adds to the hate Arabs and Persians justifiably feel for our country as Israel's crutch. The Iraq episode has weakened the crutch and provided the anti-Israel fighters opportunities that they're now taking advantage of. We could have avoided this by insisting that Israel back off of it's ill-gotten lands and abide by the dozens of UN resolutions that correctly addressed this lebensraum conduct. Instead we helped Israel ignore the UN resolutions and went through three decades of weakening the UN. The Clinton Administration made some headway with Korea that the Neocons like Bolton couldn't stand. so they reversed it. We've meddled in Putin's affairs under false pretenses far too much, and in some very counterproductive ways. He's not perfect but he's trying to reclaim his Nation's resources that Yeltsin gave to some Ken Lay type Oligarchs. More power to him. For a different perspective on this issue take a look at: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060717/cohen_charlierose_video Sure - it can be argued as you did that Bush didn't create all of these problems. But the issue is that instead of working toward intelligent solutions his administration has directly/indirectly made them worse and neglected to act in responsible ways to solve them. And you didn't touch on some of our other "little" problems the Bush administration has ignored and made worse like the passing of peak world oil production, the massive new pollution loads from developing nations like China and global warming. If he's smart enough to realize his mistakes, which I doubt, and feels remorse and the pain of stress, he's getting what he deserves. Unfortunately our Nation will suffer much more than he will, and so will many innocents throughout the World. ______________________ For Bush, A World Of Worry By David S. Broder - Thursday, July 13, 2006; A23, WP http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/07/12/AR200607... Pretend for a moment that you are in the president's cabin on Air Force One as he tours Europe this week and heads for the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg. What does the world look like to you? The answer, in one word, is trouble. Taking them in ascending order of difficulty, the trouble spots look like this: .................... Bush is largely blameless for all these troubles. The nations involved have made their own choices for their own reasons and probably would be behaving that way no matter who was in the White House. But the same cannot be said of the final and largest trouble spot: · Iraq -- This country was transformed by Bush's war of choice, and it is increasingly doubtful that the change is for the better. Instead of the tyranny and brutality of Saddam Hussein, Iraqis are facing the daily carnage and bloodshed of an undeclared civil war between Shiite and Sunni militias. .................... ______________________ Want to express yourself to "the Dean"?
