The presidential election: delegates and the popular vote

I was over at Wikipedia looking up the dates for the last remaining primary dates when I found some interesting maps looking at how Obama and Clinton have done state-by-state in regards to the popular vote and delegate count.

Pledged delegate map

  • Obama has won 27 states, DC, Virgin Islands, and Democrats Abroad.
  • Senator Clinton has won 12 states and American Samoa.
  • The candidates tied in two states.

Popular vote map

  • Obama won 26 states plus DC, Virgin Islands, and Democrats Abroad.
  • Clinton has won 15 states plus American Samoa.

These maps were made before the weekend's caucuses in Guam, where the pledged delegate total was tied (2-2), and Obama pulled in an extremely slim win in votes (he won by 7 votes, 2,264 to 2,257).

I thought these maps were pretty interesting to look at how the candidates have done across the country.

Final primaries:

There are eight more primaries left in the race (pledged delegates listed in parenthesis):

Tuesday, May 6: Indiana (72) and North Carolina (115)
Tuesday, May 13: West Virginia (28)
Tuesday, May 20: Kentucky (51) and Oregon (52)
Sunday, June 1: Puerto Rico (55)
Tuesday, June 3: Montana (16) and South Dakota (15)

Maps:

caucuses.
Obama won the delegate count in the darkest purple states by
the largest
margins, while Clinton won the delegate count in the
darkest green states by
the largest margins. They tied in MO and NH.

Popular vote
Popular Vote margins in the Democratic primaries and caucuses.

The darkest purple states voted for Obama by the largest margins,
while
the darkest green states voted for Clinton by the largest margins.

(Popular vote winners and delegate winners differ in four states: NH, NV, MO, and TX.)

popular vote

When reporting the popular vote, you used the number of states won, however the popular vote is commonly used as a count of the number of votes for each candidate and then you could look at it state by state and the margin of the win. So you "misunderestimated" the popular vote.

Actually...

Actually, my comparison here was how many states did a candidate win - how many did they win if you look at the popular vote, and how many did they win if you look at delegates. Either way, Obama has more than half of the states.

And these maps aren't mine - they were made by someone else and I was commenting on them.
