Walden’s Priorities
Submitted by Moses Ross on June 18, 2008 - 12:02pm.
Oregonians should watch the video and then call Greg Walden to remind him he works for Oregon, not Big Oil. Portland – Thirty three of Oregon’s 36 counties rely on timber payments to fund schools, libraries, law enforcement and other community sustaining resources. Two weeks ago U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) told those 33 counties’ sheriffs, librarians, teachers and other leaders that he has a higher priority – Big Oil profits. “Greg Walden stood on the house floor and voted to close schools, shutter libraries and eliminate sheriff’s patrols so that Big Oil could raise its profits,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “When our rural communities needed him most, he voted to cut their funding. Watch the video to see how Oregon has reacted to Walden’s ‘betrayal.’ Then call him up and remind him he works for Oregon, not Big Oil.” http://www.oregondemocrats.org/walden Bookmark/Search this post with: »

Clackamas Co. moves to stabilize library funding
The Clackamas County Commision is proposing to refer a ballot measure to voters in November to create a library service district. It will provide stable and dedicated revenue for libraries following the county's loss of $12,000,000 in Federal Secure Rural School Funding (AKA timber dollars).
To keep libraries open in the county, the average homeowner will have to pay almost $82 more in property taxes annually. Thanks, Greg!

Governor's Task Force reports painful cuts ahead
According to the report from the Governor’s Task Force on Federal Forest Payments And County Services Clackamas County will lose about $3 million in funding for its 58,000 K-12 students, over $5 million (6%) from its general fund, and about $4 million (15%) from its road fund.
That's gonna hurt, but puts us nowhere near the looming crisis for 12 other Oregon counties illustrated in the article in the Oregonian Loss of timber payments cuts across Oregon. Four counties in the southwest corner of the state (Josephine, Douglas, Curry, and Coos) will lose over half of their general fund revenue. Squirm as we might, the pain will not stop soon.
