Moses Ross's blogWalden’s PrioritiesSubmitted by Moses Ross on June 18, 2008 - 12:02pm.Oregonians should watch the video and then call Greg Walden to remind him he works for Oregon, not Big Oil. Portland – Thirty three of Oregon’s 36 counties rely on timber payments to fund schools, libraries, law enforcement and other community sustaining resources. Two weeks ago U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) told those 33 counties’ sheriffs, librarians, teachers and other leaders that he has a higher priority – Big Oil profits. “Greg Walden stood on the house floor and voted to close schools, shutter libraries and eliminate sheriff’s patrols so that Big Oil could raise its profits,” DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. “When our rural communities needed him most, he voted to cut their funding. Watch the video to see how Oregon has reacted to Walden’s ‘betrayal.’ Then call him up and remind him he works for Oregon, not Big Oil.” continue reading this blog posting » »
What we can do re: ImpeachmentSubmitted by Moses Ross on June 13, 2008 - 12:02pm.On Monday, June 9th, 2008, Congressman Dennis Kucinich presented 35 Articles of Impeachment against President George W. Bush in the United States House of Representatives. Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida, a member of the House Judiciary committee, has enthusiastically co-sponsored this vitally important bill. On Wednesday, June 11, 2008, the House voted to refer the resolution to the House Judiciary Committee. Contrary to what some news outlets are reporting, this does not kill the resolution to impeach. The Judiciary Committee can start hearings on the articles of impeachment any time they vote to do so. However, unless we, the American public, make our voices heard the Committee may avoid taking action.

4th of July: Happy Independence Day!Submitted by Moses Ross on July 4, 2006 - 8:14am.Dear Oregon Democrats, July 4th has become a day from which we take a break from the normal routines. May I suggest that we also take the time to re-evaluate our dedication to the higher principle of exercising and preserving our individual freedoms, liberties and unalienable rights which are the cornerstones of our communities? Our founding fathers articulated these self-evident truths into a document called The Declaration of Independence. Every now and then we need to be reminded of these truths. Scroll down to review a transcript of this inspired document. You can find lots more cool information about the document here: http://www.archives.gov/national_archives_experience/charters/declaratio... Happy Fourth of July and God Bless America! Memorial Day '06: What is a Vet?Submitted by Moses Ross on May 29, 2006 - 11:07am.On this Memorial Day of 2006, it is especially important that we recognize the difference between the idiotic policy-makers who created this war and the common citizens who end up fighting it. Please take a moment to remember the true heroes of our country, those who have protected our freedoms, yes, even the freedoms of those politicians in Washington who have been abusing our rights. I am speaking of the fine men and women of our military. They are why we are here today, able to have this discussion in the first place. If you are a Vet, thank you. Moses Ross **** WHAT IS A VET Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? continue reading this blog posting » »
The Framing of ImmigrationSubmitted by Moses Ross on May 23, 2006 - 10:39am.The Framing of Immigration http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0520-23.htm On May 15th, in an address from the Oval Office, President Bush presented his proposal for “comprehensive immigration reform." The term “immigration reform” evokes an issue-defining conceptual frame — The Immigration Problem Frame — a frame that imposes a structure on the current situation, defines a set of “problems” with that situation, and circumscribes the possibility for “solutions.” “Reform,” when used in politics, indicates there is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed — take “medicare reform,” “lobbying reform,” “social security reform.” The noun that's attached to reform — “immigration” — points to where the problem lies. Whatever noun is attached to “reform” becomes the locus of the problem and constrains what counts as a solution. continue reading this blog posting » »
