News-release 12-17-06
Human-Chain protest set New Years Day on the Steel bridge against the Bush’s continuing war policies.

President Bush will be thumbing his nose at millions of voters who sent his administration a message Nov. 7 to get out of Iraq IMMEDIATELY. He’s going to send in 30,000 more troops to die for his oil war. And Democratic Majority leader Harry Reid announced Sunday he’ll support that move as long as it’s temporary. Wasn’t that the same line General Westmoreland used each time he added just a few more troops “temporarily” because victory was always in sight.

Start the New Year right with a message to the Bushies—and Senators Wyden, Smith and Reps. Blumenauer, DeFazio, Hooley, Wu: “No More Money for Bush’s Oil War.”

Come to the Steel bridge and its bridgeheads on New Years Day from NOON to 2 p.m for a peace-related, family-oriented protest demonstration. Be in place on the bridge at 1 o’clock.

It’s a human chain so signs—Iraq exit, impeachment, 3000 KIAs—will have to be worn on jackets or hats. Bring water. Wear warm clothes. Make sure kids “go” before the event because there won’t be any porta-potties.

It’s uncomplicated. No speeches. No chants. Maybe a song or two everyone (of all ages) knows. Event is initiated by the South Side DFA MeetUp group, but it’s for the general public, for activists, and for activist groups in the state and area.

Democratic Senators Ryan Deckert and Kurt Schrader Speak

7:00 Monday

December 18th

First Unitarian Church
SW 12th between SW Main and Salmon, Ptld.

The discussion will center on their ”Hopeful Reform,” a bi-partisan plan to bring stability to Oregon’s tax system.

The Senators say the plan is a beginning point for discussion on improving the tax base in Oregon. Primarily, the idea reduces the income tax and raises a similar amount of money with a sales tax. Other provisions currently in the plan include taxing capital gains at a lower rate than earned income and adding to the tax breaks on property taxes for primary residences for both owners and renters.

This is an opportunity to understand and influence the outcome of taxation in Oregon.

Come talk with the Senators Monday evening in the Chapel Room of the Salmon Street Building.

Those supporting impeaching President Bush and Vice President Cheney are invited to attend Wednesday’s (May 10) City Council meeting at 9:30 a.m. That’s when a Resolution to Impeach both men will be presented to City Commissioners and Mayor Potter by the DFA’s Old Friends Coffeehouse MeetUp group.

A similar resolution by the group is pending before Multnomah County’s Commissioners.

At least twelve cities—including San Francisco— have passed such resolutions in the last few months. Three state legislatures—California, Vermont, and Illinois—will be voting on impeachment resolutions. Under Congressional rules, an impeachment resolution passed by a governmental body such as a state legislature can be sent to the U.S. House of Representatives for immediate action.

U.S. Rep. David Wu is among 36 House members who, in the last few weeks, have become co-sponsors of Rep. John Conyers’ bill—HR 635—which starts the impeachment process. That action followed revelations Bush and Cheney:

• disobeyed the Fourth Amendment in authorizing warrantless wiretapping for the last two years

• outed Valerie Plame’s intelligence team investigating Iran’s nuclear program

• lied to Congress and the American public to attack and occupy Iraq.

Last week, the Boston Globe reported Bush has nullified at least 750 bills passed by Congress after he signed them, through secret signing statements.

Four Democrats challenging Rep. Greg Walden in Oregon’s Second District—Chuck Butcher, Dan Davis, Scott Silver, and Carol Voisin—have promised that if elected, they’ll make impeachment the first order of business when the new Congress convenes in January.
