On being a young activist....

Hello to everyone in the Blog for Oregon community! As a new member, I wanted to lay out a few of the thoughts that led me to join your merry little band.

First off -- being raised in a political family, I've always had a strong interest in current events and political news. However, I never thought of having a career in activism or politics until I started working with student groups at the University of Oregon. Those experiences, along with the realities of Life After College, made me realize that my heart truly lies with working to make my community, my nation, a better place to live, work and love for everyone who calls it home.

Secondly, after spending a lot of time reading other blogs, I decided I wanted to contribute my own voice to the melee. As a member of what is alternately called Generation Y or the Millenial Generation, I feel I have experiences and opinions that often differ from those of most political bloggers. My aim is to write posts that address what it means to be a feminist of the Third Wave era, a recent graduate struggling to find a job or health care, a queer person trying to navigate the realities of second-class citizenship. Basically, to start discussions on the realities of being a young, political, modern American.

Wish me luck.

Welcome!

Submitted by sysadmin on April 10, 2008 - 7:24pm.

Welcome to the blog. I look forward to your participation in the blog.

It's always great to have more young people blogging about their thoughts and experiences. I'm a member of "Gen X" and just turned 30, and I know that my experiences are a rarity within politics right now. Those that are my age are often well off, not married or are married without kids, etc. So often times the needs of families like mine are overlooked in politics, which is a big reason why they don't vote.
