Gordon Smith stretches his "Democratic credentials" even further
Submitted by Jenni on June 25, 2008 - 11:47am
We all know about Gordon Smith and how he tries to make himself look like a Democrat. He's careful to never list himself as a Republican on his web site. He likes to tout in ads how Democrats support him, how he supports progressive issues like ending the war in Iraq and opposing drilling in the Arctic. He tries to make it appear that he's an independent voter who doesn't follow his party lines. But his new ad goes even further. In his newest ad, he is aligning with Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. From the Associated Press:
The entire story can be found here. Kari Chisholm has more on this story at Blue Oregon. And Jeff Mapes has a piece over at Oregon Live on the ad as well. From Mapes:
Absolutely disgusting. Gordon Smith has been a huge supporter of John McCain (Smith endorsed McCain and is the chairman of his campaign in Oregon); however, he knows that Oregon is going to vote heavily for Obama this fall. Plus he figures he is guaranteed most of the Republican vote - it's the Democrats and non-affiliated voters he is trying to court. Never mind the fact that he's voted more than 90% of the time with Bush and the Republican Party. Never mind that while he "opposes the war," he's voted every time for the war when the vote mattered. Never mind that while he "opposes drilling in the Arctic," he voted for it. He's a Republican through and through and needs to be replaced. Let's send Gordon Smith a message - he's not a Democrat, he's not an Independent voice, and he doesn't represent Oregon's interests. Let's send him packing to Pendleton and send Jeff Merkley to represent us in D.C. |

Gordon Smith TV ads
I was so angry at the lie in his ad "one of the first" to oppose the war that I made my first video for YouTube. The Oregonian on Wednesday said Elizabeth Furse had been out of the country and did not realize her mistake. The Gordon Smith campaign knew the lie, produced the video, distributed it and played it over and over on TV even after being told of the lie by TV journalists and The Oregonian. For a while the Smith ad on YouTube was restricted and no comments were allowed. Now we can comment.
My video response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n43W8nEqk0s
Smith's new "Obama Ad" on YouTube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGDJijGCeO4&eurl=http://www.gordonsmith.c...
has over 26,000 viewers and it does not allow comments. I can guess why!
Furse correction of endorsement is inadequate
Ms. Furse' correction of her praise of Sen. Smith in his TV ad, as quoted in the Oregonian is inadequate and worthless: "I know that he wasn't the first to oppose the war," said Furse. "He was one of the first of his party to oppose the war . . . That is what I meant." How about apologizing for saying Smith was "one of the first to stand up to George Bush and other Republicans to end this war" but not saying that he immediately sat down again and voted how they told him whenever the Iraq 'war' came up later? "I'm on fire because I have mountains of ice before me to melt." - Wendell Phillips (1811 - 1884)
Right
Or that his opposition came years after other Republicans came out in opposition? Heck, there was a Republican Senator who voted against the war in the first place.
He's never been against the war, except in words that don't matter. In every action of his that has mattered, he has supported the war.
Gordon Smith provides a Useful Portend
In his I-stand-with-Obama ads, Senator Smith provides to us a barameter of sorts, a measure of how he and others believe the Presidential election will go.
I'm inclined to think he is right.
This is very great
This is very great information. The Oregonian on Wednesday said Elizabeth Furse had been out of the country and did not realize her mistake. He's not a Democrat, he's not an Independent voice, and he doesn't represent Oregon's interests.
