Guide to Eugene Oregon

Nestled at the confluence of the McKenzie and Willamette rivers in the southern portion of the lush Willamette  Valley,  Eugene is well regarded for its outstanding recreational amenities and relaxed, arts-focused community. The Emerald City is also home to the University of Oregon and a wealth of cultural amenities such as the Hult Center for the Performing Arts and the Eugene Saturday Market, the longest running outdoor artisan market in the country. In the 1970s, Eugene experienced an influx of counterculture idealists whose philosophical views influenced the city’s political and social climate. Today this area is still defined by its tolerance for alternative lifestyles and strong population of environmental activists, organic food cooperatives and worker-owned collectives. The Oregon Country Fair in nearby Veneta is considered an offshoot of the hippie movement and has been taking place each year since 1969 when it opened as a barter and trade fair to benefit a local alternative grade school.

Nicknamed “Track Town, USA”, Eugene is the birthplace of athletics brand Nike and home of famed sports venues Hayward Field and the Oregon Ducks football team’s Autzen Stadium. The Prefontaine Classic takes place each year at Hayward Field, bringing more than 10,000 visiting athletes and spectators to the OSU campus to take part in this single day event. Eugene is also given credit for bringing the jogging craze to the United States in the 1960s, after OSU coach Bill Bowerman witnessed the sport during a trip to New Zeleand, and continues to rate in the top 10 best cities for track and running.

In addition to its eco-conscious citizens and innovative industry, Eugene features an abundance of beautiful historical buildings, shaded streets and family friendly neighborhoods. With its youthful exuberance, pristine natural beauty and fine cultural offerings, the city and surrounding towns make an ideal travel or relocation destination.

Guide to Portland Oregon

The largest city in Oregon, Portland is well known for its vibrant creative culture, outstanding urban amenities and eco-conscious attitude. Downtown Portland is a bustling counterpoint to the city’s many relaxed, family friendly neighborhoods and boasts a variety of destination hotels, restaurants, art galleries and trendy nightspots. Adjacent to downtown proper is the newly renovated Pearl District, an upscale commercial/residential area filled with posh shops, boutique eateries and gorgeously appointed lofts and condos. The Pearl is also home to Powell’s Books, the largest bookstore on the west coast, which covers an entire city block with four stories and literally millions of new and used books, magazines and independently published volumes. Portlanders also take their beer very seriously; craft brewing began here with the opening of the Henry Weinhard brewery in 1856 and today residents enjoy access to more brewpubs per capita than any other city in the country.

Proximity to a remarkable array of outdoor destinations is another distinguishing characteristic of The City of Roses, as Portland is located at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge and overlooked by majestic Mt. Hood. There are more than 200 parks within city limits, including Mill End, the world’s smallest park at 452 square inches, and Forest Park Forest Park, the nation’s largest metropolitan forest, with over 5000 acres of canopied woodland set along downtown’s northwest border. Just 70 miles from the nearest ocean beach, Portland is situated perfectly to take advantage of the best of the Northwest’s natural beauty.

Portland’s artistic community is well known, and its creative economy encompasses a huge variety of businesses, arts institutions and social organizations.  Coupled with low cost of living, this is one of the many reasons more than 20,000 people relocate to the Portland metro area each year. An award winning transportation system means residents of this sustainably minded metropolis can easily commute between neighborhoods, suburbs and outlying recreational areas. With its temperate climate, excellent cultural offerings and relaxed atmosphere, Portland’s reputation as one of the country’s most livable cities is clearly well deserved.
